Origin
The Opuntia maxima, better known as the Prickly Pear, originates from the warm and dry areas of the American continent. It primarily occurs in Mexico and the southwestern United States. The plant thrives well in desert-like areas and is thus well adapted to life in dry, poor soil and hot temperatures.
Characteristics
The Opuntia maxima is a type of cactus that distinguishes itself through its flat, oval-shaped leaves, otherwise known as 'paddles'. These are covered in small, delicate spines that easily detach upon contact. The plant produces brightly coloured flowers, ranging from yellow and orange to red and pink, and also bears juicy fruits. The Opuntia maxima can grow into a substantial plant several metres high and wide.
Care
The Opuntia maxima requires little water, which makes it an ideal plant for dry areas or as a pot plant in a dry environment. The cactus performs best in full sun and requires well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Although the plant can withstand frost, it is advisable to protect the plant at temperatures below freezing point. The Prickly Pear requires little maintenance, but removing dead or damaged 'paddles' can help promote the health and growth of the plant.
