Origin
The Parodia leninghausii, also known as the Golden ball cactus, originates from Brazil and Paraguay. The plant is part of the Cactaceae family and is named after the German botanist Wilhelm Lenninghaus. This type of cactus prefers rocky areas and is very tolerant of dry conditions, typical of its natural habitat in South America.
Characteristics
Characteristic of the Parodia leninghausii are the cylindrical to globe-shaped forms, covered with golden thorns. Mature plants can reach a height of 15 to 40 cm and a diameter of 10 to 15 cm. The flowers that form at the top of the cactus are usually yellow and can have a diameter of 6 cm. The plant also has a woolly crown from which flowers and fruits grow.
Care
In terms of care, the Parodia leninghausii requires full sun or semi-shade. The plant needs a well-draining soil and should only be watered when the soil is completely dry, as too much water can cause root rot. During the winter months, it is advisable to reduce watering and not allow the temperature to drop below 10 degrees Celsius. Keep in mind that this plant is susceptible to fungal infections, so good air circulation is essential.
