Origin
The Vatricania guentheri is a type of cactus that originates from southern Ecuador and northern Peru. This plant was discovered and first scientifically described in the early twentieth century. This cactus is also known as the 'Ecuadorian apple cactus' due to its place of origin and the fruit-like shape of its trunk.
Characteristics
The Vatricania guentheri is a columnar cactus that can reach a height of three to four meters. The trunks have a striking blue-grey colour and are covered with spikes. The plant produces white to light pink flowers that open at night and close at the first rays of sunlight. The fruits that the plant produces after flowering are bright red and contain multiple seeds.
Care
The Vatricania guentheri requires full sun to guarantee healthy growth and can withstand drought periods thanks to its water storage capacity in the trunk. Although the plant can tolerate some frost, it thrives best in a warm climate. Moderate watering during the growing season and little to no water during the dormant period contributes to the health and longevity of the plant. The plant substrate must be well draining to prevent root rot.
