Origin
The Ligustrum japonicum 'Texanum' is a variant of the Ligustrum japonicum and originates from Japan. This evergreen shrub has long been appreciated in Japanese gardens for its resilience to pollution and graceful agility. Over the years, the plant has established itself as an invasive species in different parts of the United States.
Characteristics
The Ligustrum japonicum 'Texanum' is a dense, compact shrub that grows to a height of 1.5 to 3 metres and sometimes even higher. The leaves are dark green, glossy and leather-like. In late spring and early summer, the shrub develops white, fragrant flower screens, after which black berries appear. It is a graceful and robust plant that is attractive to wildlife, particularly birds.
Care
The Ligustrum japonicum 'Texanum' thrives best in full sun to semi-shade and in well-draining soil. Although the shrub is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering after planting is crucial. To maintain a compact, dense growth, it is advisable to prune the shrub annually. The plant does not have any specific disease or pest problems, making it an easy-to-care-for plant for both experienced and beginner gardeners.
