Origin
The Olea europaea, commonly known as the olive tree, has its origin in the Mediterranean region. This ancient tree species, which has been cultivated for more than 6000 years, is now grown worldwide in regions with a Mediterranean climate. It is primarily valued for its fruits, olives, which contribute to economies and cuisines all over the world.

Characteristics
The Olea europaea is an evergreen, long-lived tree that can grow up to 15 metres tall. Its leaves are grey-green in colour, whilst the bark can be silver-grey to almost black. The tree produces small, white flowers, followed by round fruits, the olives, which change from green to purple as they ripen. Its root system is strong, capable of reaching deep into the ground, contributing to its drought resistance and ability to grow in a wide range of soil types.

Care
The Olea europaea requires well-drained soil and a sunny location to thrive. Regular watering is necessary, particularly during the first years of growth. However, in colder climates, the tree may be sensitive to frost and may need to be brought indoors during winter or protected with covers. The tree only needs to be pruned to maintain a desired shape or for olive production, if intended. Major changes in the environment, such as relocation, can stress the tree and cause temporary leaf loss.
