Phormium tenax 'Purpureum', more commonly known as the New Zealand flax plant, has its roots on the other side of the world, in New Zealand. This ubiquitous plant has been cultivated for centuries by the Maoris, for both its aesthetic and practical values. This evergreen perennial is entrenched in the history of the island, and is an indispensable part of the native flora.

Characteristics
One of the most striking characteristics of Phormium tenax 'Purpureum' is its intense colour. It exhibits a striking deep chestnut to almost purple hue that makes for a dramatic spectacle in the garden. This plant can also reach considerable dimensions, with leaves that can grow up to 2 metres high and 5 cm wide at maturity. It blooms in the summer, with long purple stems that bear inflorescences with red or yellow flowers.

Care
