Origin
The Hylocereus Undatus, also known as Pitahaya or Dragon Fruit, originates from Central America. It's from countries such as Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and El Salvador that this cactus family has spread across the world. Due to the adaptability of the species, it can be found in tropical to subtropical climates worldwide, from Australia to China and Israel.
Characteristics
The Hylocereus Undatus is a climbing cactus with triangular stems. These stems can grow up to 10 metres long and have small spikes. The flowers of the Hylocereus Undatus are incredibly large, sometimes up to 25 centimetres in diameter, and only bloom at night. The fruit this cactus produces is the most noticeable characteristic: a vibrant pink, spherical fruit with green scales, the so-called dragon fruit.
Care
The Hylocereus Undatus requires a warm, sunny position and well-drained soil. As the plant originates from a tropical climate, it's necessary to protect it from frost and cold. During the growing season, which runs from spring to autumn, the plant needs plenty of water. In the winter period, the Hylocereus Undatus should be kept dry. It's recommended to fertilise the plant once a month during the growth period.
