The Thuja occidentalis 'Emerald', better known as the Emerald Arborvitae, is originally from North America. This conifer was introduced to Europe in the 19th century and has since become very popular as a garden and hedge plant.
Characteristics
The Thuja occidentalis 'Emerald' is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer often used as a hedge. The plant has a compact, upright growth habit with dense branches covered in bright green, fine scales. When fully grown, this species can reach up to 6 meters in height. A characteristic feature of this yew is its strong fragrance, which is released when the leaves are pressed.
Care
For the Thuja occidentalis 'Emerald', a sunny to semi-shadowy location is ideal. The plant is well suited for nutritious, permeable, moist to moderately dry soils. It remains green, even at cold temperatures, but need protection against extreme frost. To keep the plant healthy, an annual trimming is recommended to maintain the dense form.
