Origin
Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus', also known as the Porcupine Grass, is a variety of Miscanthus, a plant genus that originally hails from Asia. This variety is particularly prevalent in Japan, China and Korea. However, Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus' is also widespread in Europe and North America, where it is often used as an ornamental plant in gardens and public green spaces.
Characteristics
The Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus' is a perennial, herbaceous plant that can grow up to 2 meters high. Characteristic of this plant are the green leaves with striking yellow stripes and purple-brown, plume-like flowers that appear in the autumn. The plant has an upright growth habit and forms dense clumps. Moreover, the Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus' contributes to the colour palette of the garden in the autumn and winter, as the leaves change to beautiful shades of brown.
Care
In terms of care, the Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus' does not require much. The plant is hardy and tolerates most soils, although it prefers well-drained soil. Full sun or partial shade are the best locations for this plant. In terms of water requirement, the plant can tolerate drought quite well, but during prolonged periods of drought, additional watering is advisable. The best time to prune the plant is in the spring, just before the new growth begins.
