Archontophoenix alexandrae (350-400)
Stem

Origin
Hyophorbe verschaffeltii, also known as the Spindle Palm or Mascarena verschaffeltii, is a rare species of the palm family originally found on Rodrigues, one of the Mascarene Islands situated in the Indian Ocean. This unique species of palm however, is now primarily cultivated in botanical gardens and parks around the world, due to its 'critically endangered' status in the wild.
Characteristics
The Hyophorbe verschaffeltii is a small, slow-growing palm characterised by its striking slim trunk, which is thicker in the middle and tapers off towards the top and bottom. This palm has a grey to light brown bark and carries long, feathered leaves that have a bright green colour. The palm produces small yellow flowers and red, egg-shaped fruits. In the wild, the Spindle Palm can reach up to 6 metres in height, but in cultivation the height is usually limited to around 3 metres.
Care
Like other palms, the Hyophorbe verschaffeltii prefers well-draining soil and a warm, sunny growth climate. Proper watering is essential, but the palm generally cannot tolerate waterlogging. Protect the palm from low temperatures, especially during winter, and ensure well-fertilised soil for optimal growth. Although this palm species is relatively drought-resistant, regular watering will lead to a healthier and more beautiful palm.
