Origin
The Mammillaria melanocentra, also known as the black nipple cactus, originates from Mexico. This plant belongs to the Cactaceae family and can be found growing in the wild in the states of Querétaro and Hidalgo. The natural growing areas of this cactus are mainly highlands and rocky regions.
Characteristics
The Mammillaria melanocentra is a short, cylindrical cactus. The plant has oval, dark green to black nipples with white to pink flowers blooming in the spring and summer. The cactus can reach a height of 25 to 30 cm and a diameter of 8 cm. Generally, the plant has between 15 to 25 radial spines and 2 to 4 central spines that are black or dark brown.
Care
The Mammillaria melanocentra requires only minimal care. The plant needs well-draining soil and a sunny to semi-shady location. Watering should be moderate and only when the soil is completely dry. The Mammillaria melanocentra must be protected from frost in the winter. Generally, the plant can be kept at room temperature. If one wishes to propagate the plant, this can be done through sowing seeds or grafting offsets.
