Origin
The Picea orientalis 'Aureospicata', also known as the Yellow Oriental Spruce, found its origin in the mountainous regions of Asia Minor, in particular eastern Turkey and the Transcaucasus. This ornamental tree is popular worldwide, but it grows best in cool, northern climates.
Characteristics
The Picea orientalis 'Aureospicata' is an evergreen tree that develops striking yellow new foliage in the spring which gradually turns greener. It's a relatively slow-growing tree that can reach a height of 2 metres after 10 years. The cones of the tree are brown in colour and become visible in the autumn. The leaves of the tree are needle-like and project stiffly.
Care
Although the Picea orientalis 'Aureospicata' is a robust tree, has specific care needs to be able to grow optimally. The tree prefers a location with full sun and fertile, well-draining soil. Too much water is not good for the tree, but dehydration must also be prevented. It is advisable to fertilise the tree in early spring to promote healthy growth. Pruning is best done in late winter or early spring, just before new growth emerges.
