Origin
The Brachychiton acerifolius, also known as the Australian flame tree, has its origin in the subtropical rainforest of Australia. It belongs to the Sterculiaceae family and can be found in the eastern states of Australia. This tree is particularly found in rainforests, along rivers and on rocky slopes in coastal areas.
Characteristics
The Brachychiton acerifolius is a fast-growing and evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 metres high. The most distinctive characteristic of this tree are the bright red flowers that grow in clusters on the tree, especially from late spring to early summer. Moreover, they produce distinctive seed pods that look like wooden boats, also dubbed 'boat fruits'. The elliptical, glossy and somewhat jagged leaf is dark green in colour.
Care
When taking care of the Brachychiton acerifolius, it's essential to provide sufficient space, considering its growth rate and ultimate size. The tree loves full sun or partial shade and requires well-draining soil. Due to its origin, this plant is relatively tolerant to drought and can handle different types of soil, from sand to clay. Although this tree can withstand some drought, regular watering during drought is necessary for optimal growth.
