Archontophoenix alexandrae
Stem
4ARALRS45
Origin
The Caryota mitis, also known as the fishtail palm, originally comes from Southeast Asia. The natural habitat of the plant extends from India to the Philippines and from Thailand to Northern Australia. They prefer to grow in warm, humid forests where they are often found along riverbanks and in swampy conditions.
Characteristics
The Caryota mitis is characterised by its unique form of leaves that resemble the tail of a fish. The plant can grow up to 12 metres high, although indoors it often does not exceed 6 metres. The growth process is relatively slow, meaning it takes some time before the full length is reached. Each plant only produces fruit once in its lifetime, at the end of its life cycle.
Care
Optimal care of the Caryota mitis includes placement in semi-shade to full sun and regular watering without drowning. The plant does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C and requires high humidity, which is why daily spraying or a humidifier is beneficial. The use of regular potting soil is adequate, although the addition of peat to the soil can promote growth.
