Origin
The Calathea sanderiana, also known as the Maranta sanderiana, has its origin in the tropical rainforests of South America, mainly Brazil. This plant species belongs to the family of Marantaceae and primarily grows in shady and moist environments.
Characteristics
The Calathea sanderiana is known for its striking leaves that grow on long, slender stems. These leaves are dark green on the top and have a purplish-red colour on the underside, where they are covered with a pattern of fine lines that are lighter in colour. A characteristic feature of this plant species is the rhythm it keeps; spreading its leaves during the day and closing them at night, a phenomenon known as nictinasty.
Care
For optimal care, it is important that the Calathea sanderiana is placed where it is not exposed to direct sunlight, but still receives ample light. This plant loves high humidity and requires regular watering to keep the soil slightly moist. Fertiliser can consist of a standard indoor plant feed, which can be administered monthly during the growing season. It is important to avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot.
