DescriptionSpecifications

Origin
The Acer palmatum 'Skeeter's Broom' is a cultivar of the Japanese maple and originates from Japan, Korea and China. The plant appeared as a spontaneous mutation of the Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood'. It was introduced in the US in the 80s by a man named Skeeter, hence its name.

Characteristics
The 'Skeeter's Broom' is a compact, upright shrub known for its beautiful red leaves that turn a bright red to purple in the autumn. The leaves are palmate and have five to seven lobes. The plant can reach a height of 180 to 220 cm and thus is smaller than most maples. In spring, the 'Skeeter's Broom' produces inconspicuous, purple-red flowers.

Care
The Acer palmatum 'Skeeter's Broom' has a preference for a place in partial shade or full sun. It will grow best in moist, well-drained soil with a pH between 5.0 and 7.5. It is advised to protect the plant from strong winds, as it is susceptible to foliage burn. Watering is required during prolonged droughts and the plant can be fed with an all-purpose fertiliser in spring. The 'Skeeter's Broom' requires little upkeep, but can be pruned to maintain its shape.
