Origin
The Citrus kumquat, also known as Citrofortunella, traces its origin back to Asia, particularly in Southeast China, Malaysia, and the Philippines. In these countries, the plant has been known and cultivated for centuries. The Citrus kumquat was introduced in Europe and the United States in the 19th century.
Characteristics
The Citrofortunella kumquat is a small, evergreen citrus tree that can grow to a height of 2.5 to 4.5 meters. The tree bears small, round to oval fruits that are orange in colour when ripe. The fruits of the Citrus kumquat have a sweet peel and sour pulp, making them unique amongst citrus fruits.
Care
Caring for a Citrus kumquat requires a sunny location and well-draining soil. The plant needs a lot of water, especially during the flowering period and the growing season. Moreover, the Citrofortunella kumquat can survive cold temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius, but the plant needs protection from strong winds and frost. Additionally, the citrus tree should be regularly fed with a nutrient that is high in nitrogen.
