Origin
The Ilex crenata 'Caroline Upright', often known as the Japanese holly, originates from East Asia, where it grows in both China and Japan. This plant was named in honour of Caroline Emig, an American gardener who popularised it in western gardens.

Characteristics
The Ilex crenata 'Caroline Upright' is an evergreen shrub with dark green leaves and a dense, columnar growth. It has small, inconspicuous white flowers that bloom in late spring and are followed by black berries in the autumn. The plant can reach a height of about 1 metre and can spread up to 40 centimetres. This shrub tends to grow higher than it does wide, hence the addition of 'Upright' to its name.

Care
For optimal growth, the Ilex crenata 'Caroline Upright' needs a spot with plenty of light but it can also grow well in partial shade. The plant prefers well-draining soil and does not cope well with waterlogging. Regular pruning is recommended for the care of this plant in order to maintain its dense, upright shape. Although it is hardy, it can sustain damage from severe frost, so a sheltered spot is advised.
