Bonsai (170-200)
5ILCKSS20
Origin
The Ilex crenata 'Impala' is a variant of the Japanese holly, a plant species originally from East Asia. The natural spread of the species varies from Japan and Korea to parts of China and India. It is an ornamental plant often used in regions with a temperate climate. In Europe and North America, the 'Impala' is popular for use in gardens and parks.
Characteristics
Ilex crenata 'Impala' is a compact evergreen shrub that can grow up to 150 cm tall. The leaves are small, glossy, and dark green in colour, with a shape reminiscent of holly. Small, inconspicuous, white flowers appear in the late spring, followed by black berries in the autumn and winter season. This plant is very frost hardy and will retain its green colour in all seasons.
Care
Ilex crenata 'Impala' is best planted in moist, well-draining soil in full sun or partial shade. Whilst it is tolerant to pruning, there is no need for heavy pruning unless one wants to maintain or create a specific shape. The plant is generally quite resistant to diseases and pests, although it can be susceptible to leaf spots and fungal diseases if kept too wet. Furthermore, it needs extra water during dry periods, especially when planted in full sun.
