Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, often known as the Chinese fan palm, is originally from China and Northern India. This unique type of palm is mostly found in mountainous regions at elevations ranging from 1000 to 2400 metres. They are naturally true mountain palms and can be extremely hardy in the winter.

Characteristics
The Trachycarpus fortunei is a type of palm known for its sturdy trunk and leaves that form a fan shape. The trunk is covered in fibres and can reach a height of 12 to 20 metres. In the summer, the palm produces small yellow flowers, followed by small dark blue fruits. The leaves can reach a diameter of 2 metres and have deeply incised segments, resulting in an elegant fan effect.

Care
The Trachycarpus fortunei is an easy to care for palm that can withstand both full sun and partial shade. However, contact with midday sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves. The palm likes well-draining, humus-rich soil and needs regular watering, but tolerates drought better than overwatering. Despite its origin in high altitudes, this palm is also resistant to cold temperatures and is one of the hardiest palms. It can withstand brief temperatures down to -15°C, provided it is adequately protected.
